Diagnosis and Preventive Dentistry

Preventive dentistry is the modern approach to maintaining a healthy mouth for life. The two leading causes of tooth loss—decay and gum disease—can often be prevented with proper care. The better you manage these issues, the longer you'll keep your smile intact.

By working together, our dental team and our patients can help avoid the need for more complex treatments like fillings and extractions. We may recommend an initial treatment plan to get your mouth into optimal condition, followed by a personalized maintenance plan to help you keep it that way.

Our Preventive Procedures:

  • Your first visit will include a comprehensive dental exam. During regular check-ups, we'll conduct prophylaxis (cleaning), X-rays, and evaluations for gum disease and tooth decay. We’ll also examine existing restorations. X-rays help detect cavities, tumors, cysts, and bone loss, and allow us to assess tooth and root positions. Our gum disease evaluation checks for signs of periodontal disease, and we use specialized dental instruments to assess decay and the condition of fillings and crowns.

  • Dental cleanings are essential for removing tartar (hardened plaque) and plaque (a sticky film of bacteria, food debris, and saliva) from your teeth. Plaque inflames gums, leading to periodontal disease if not properly managed. Tartar can only be removed with special instruments, while polishing helps eliminate stains and plaque that brushing alone can’t address.

  • Fluoride is a powerful tool in preventing tooth decay and strengthening enamel. Depending on your individual risk, we typically recommend fluoride treatments twice a year. However, fluoride alone isn’t enough. Consistent brushing, flossing, limiting sugary snacks, and regular visits to our office are key to reducing your risk of decay.

  • Sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth, which are more prone to cavities. We recommend sealants for both baby and permanent teeth, and we’ll monitor them during your visits for any wear or chipping.
